Wings and Winglets
For the wing cores, the fore and aft sections are already separated. The aft core forward edges come pre-rounded and ready for the shear web layup. Wing cores also come with electrical conduits and aileron cutouts already made. Wings and upper winglets usually come as a set. If you
need only one or the other, contact me and I can cut whatever combination you need.
Upper winglets are cut 3.75″ long. The extra length is all at the top. This is easily trimmed to the proper length by the builder but it allows more options for the tips. The plans have you cut them 47” tall and then add a 1” urethane block to the top. I’m not sure what the purpose of the urethane tip is but I’ve had a number of builders ask me to leave them long so they don’t have to add that piece later. Also, some people want to do different things with the winglet tip so this gives you more options. If you just want to stick to the plans you simply trim 3.75” off the top to make them 47″ tall.
The original Long-EZ was built as a highly modified VariEze. In order to use already available parts such as the cowling, it was designed to make use of existing VariEze parts. The wing trailing edge was designed with a slight “kink” in it on the inboard cores in order to make the VariEze cowling fit properly. This kink is small but it is noticable when sighting down the trailing edge. It kinks both in planform and in the vertical. In planform it amounts to about 0.67″ and in the vertical it is 1.00″. Since many Long-EZ builders these days build their own cowlings from scratch, this kink is most likely unnecessary. Newer designs such as the ERacer and Berkut all have straight trailing edges.
Due to popular demand, I’ve decided to make a straight trailing edge modification available to anyone that wants it. This option makes the trailing edge straight in planform only. There is still a kink in the vertical. Be advised that I have never built nor flight tested this modification so use it at your own risk. Also, this will cause the wing root not to fit the plans jigs. I will make a wing root jig to fit it upon request. I can also make a trailing edge option that is straightin both the planform and the vertical in both the planform and the verticalupon request.
